Sometimes you see news headlines proclaiming miracles that seem too extraordinary to believe. “Man reunited with lost love fifty years later,” or “Child falls thirty floors and only suffers a broken leg,” they read. I’ve always questioned the truth of these tall tales, but for the first time in my life I read one of those headlines last night and when I clicked to watch the local news story, I saw a member of my own family being profiled.
The headline read, “Holocaust survivors reunite after 68 years” and the woman being interviewed was my grandmother. I didn’t even know about this miracle until I watched the video last night.

Apparently, miracles really do come true.

Hello Mr Braun,
I wanted to say you really inspired me with the pencils of promise, seeing all the work you do for people who have almost nothing made me realize that this was what I want to do! So I signed me up for a project in Nicaragua, Santo Tomas, I have to follow Spanish classes, go to several information moments but I really want to do it! And so, last week I got the news I was selected to go to the project, but I’m not doing this alone but together with 39 students and 20 adults all students and teachers from schools in Mol, a small town in Belgium. So in 2015, when I will be 16, I’ll go their and I’ll work with poor children, I’ll see things I’ve never seen before! Probably your thinking right now what has this to do with me? Well, you and pencils of promise were the reason I started thinking about doing this! So thank you for that! I hope it’s not only me that you’ve inspired but I hope all people are inspired and I hope they all realize how good we are living and that every little thing makes a difference!
Yours sincerely Emma De Ridder, a 15 years old girl from Belgium.

Adam, that’s amazing. I can’t imagine what your grandmother must have felt the moment she ran into her long-lost friend. Great for her.

Wow, that’s incredible.
